Section II: A Memory Waiting To Be Born

Section II: A Memory Waiting To Be Born

Dear Damon,
I am happy to replace your well-worn copy of my first book and find it flattering that you enjoyed it enough to wear it out!
My friend Victor Bruckham tells me that he has greatly enjoyed working with you ever since your debut as Dracula in his Halloween production four years ago. I am pleased to say I saw your work in that production. You were indeed marvelous and I wish you all the best in your future pursuits.
Regards,
Aldon R. Quay
6 February 1996

Damon Salter sipped a cup of chamomile tea and hoped he could get back to sleep. He supposed that a horror novel, even one where he already knew all the ins and outs because he’d read it at least 5 times since initially purchasing it, was not conducive to relaxation. But Aldon Quay wrote in such a familiar “between you and me, Buddy,” manner that Damon found his dialogue, if not his subject matter, soothing.
Damon wasn’t sure why he was suddenly obsessed with the idea of getting Vic to script and direct his own version of Nightshade, but he was sure that Aldon would go for it if someone who would be true to the story was involved. However, Damon could scarcely read a book without picturing himself in one of the parts, so it didn’t really surprise him, and the part of Zsolt seemed tailor-made for him. Damon was a gaunt, pale-skinned man with very dark hair, which lent him to being cast in dark or villainous roles. In his most recent role in Vic Bruckham’s very popular play “The Day After St. Valentine’s,” he had played the part of Azrael, the Angel of Death.

Damon’s wife Tula Ekjvater was a former Olympic gymnast from Hungary. She and Damon had been together since 2003 and had finally married last year. Tula, who was only 4’9” tall and weighed a mere 88 pounds normally, was ready to give birth at any time. Damon teased that the baby probably weighed half as much as she did, as much as her belly protruded from her small body. In truth, he was somewhat worried about her ability to give birth to their child. Though at 5’8” tall and 135 pounds Damon was far from a giant among men, he felt positively burly next to his tiny wife and was possessed of a strong desire to protect her. He often forgot that Tula was a fourth degree black belt in kung fu. Her petite stature and an unfortunate assault at age 16 had prompted her to learn self defense upon immigrating to the United States in 2001. Damon was now learning martial arts as well, in part due to Tula’s prompting, but also, he was loathe to admit, in part due to a macho need to be at least as powerful as his woman when it came to fighting.

Damon took a homeopathic sleep lozenge and let it dissolve in his mouth, savoring the salty-sweet orangey flavor. He began dreamily contemplating the impending birth of his son, who would be named Linsey Tzvi after beloved male relatives. Linsey Ethan Salter was Damon’s father’s name. Dad had died too young at age 54, from kidney failure. He had been gone for 3 years now, and Damon missed him terribly. Tula’s paternal grandfather Tzvi Ekjvater had been a resistance fighter during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. Damon had the good fortune of meeting him shortly before his death in 2004. He came across as stilted at first, but after talking to him for a time, Damon became aware that he was a gentle man forced into a position of great responsibility at a young age. His stern manner was simply the result of having to command the respect of his 8 younger siblings after the death of his parents. Sadly, he lost all but his youngest brother and sister in the Belsen-Bergen concentration camp during World War II. When Damon met Tzvi, he was 84 years old and suffering from a rare condition known as Zenker’s necrosis. Tzvi had nearly died from typhoid following his own confinement in Bergen-Belsen. His physician felt that this might have contributed to his developing Zenker’s, although the events occurred many years apart. Damon thought Tzvi a remarkable man and was pleased to have his child carry on his great-grandfather’s name.

Damon planned on going back to bed but he was suddenly so sleepy that he couldn’t move. He thought that perhaps he could just shut his eyes for a minute or two and then get up and take himself back to bed and sleep the rest of the night beside his wife. It wasn’t, after all, very polite to leave her alone when she could go into labor at any time. So he’d rest for just a moment and then go to her.

Damon’s head slumped against the throw pillow he’d been resting his head on and the book he was reading slid from his hand.

Rage

It is said that the most dangerous person on Earth is someone who has nothing to lose. This is true, and that someone is me. Not that I'm going to go shooting up a McDonald's or something like that. Such actions are for losers. And while I may be a loser in many ways, I'm not going to be a loser in that way. I refuse to do something so weak and petty. I much prefer to say things that make people question their beliefs. When I'm in a regular frame of mind I kind of try not to upset people. When I'm hurt I want to upset people. I want to make them question everything they've ever known. I want revenge on the world for having made me an outcast all my life for being what I am even though I never tried to hurt anybody. So I want to upset the apple cart, so to speak. Right on top of everyone. And I want it to make them fearful.
The good thing about being a nobody is that there is nobody to try to impress, so you can say what the fuck you want. What I want is to bleed out the ugliness inside me. I won't because there is another person in the house with me. But that is what I want. When the rage reaches the boiling point, the hate of the hurt that has been inflicted rises to the surface. Why it comes to this I don't know. Every spring I am filled with hate and sickness. I get seasonal depression in the spring rather than the winter. This is more common than people think. The month in which the suicide rate is highest is April, not December.
With spring comes disappointment. The realization that I have failed again rises to the surface. Things are beautiful and that somehow makes everything worse.
I published this on my psychological issues blog that I will not give the link for because its kind of a sanctuary. Why am I reprinting it here? Because you can't lose what you don't have--readers. So I'm putting it here because I fucking want to. That's all.

REGRET
I worked very hard on my book and think it had a very important message that people were too blind to see.
I know I will die a failure and filled with regret. I wish that even just a few people could have seen that I did one thing that was real and true and wonderful and not a lie just to please other people and shut them up.
Sometimes a person needs to hear "you done good."
I was always an alien in this world. Nothing I did ever fit in. I always hoped that someday I would find other aliens. But the only others are dead already.
I will die alone and unloved, I am sure. What does it matter? If you are unloved when you die you will cease to exist. So I will cease to exist. But probably even in oblivion there will be no peace but only the howling of regret.
All is shit in my dead heart.
The world would be better off if I were never born.

Fellow alien checking in to say, "You done good." Maybe the message in the book wasn't for anyone else, maybe it was very special and just for you.

I have unpublished stuff, too. It is very disappointing, isn't it? Have you shopped it all you can? You know what the pros say about this sort of thing, don't you? "What? They didn't want that book? Well, write another one!"

The book is published and available. I've sold all of 25 copies. Worthless.
The message of the book is better treatment for persons with mental illness and also a looking into the heart and soul of someone who deserved better than he got. If that is a message only for me, it's a pretty pathetic commentary on the population of this world.

I do not play the "papering the walls with rejection slips" game. I'm too old for that shit. It doesn't work for new authors these days anyhow. I used a POD publisher. This is something that I really believe in but I am very discouraged at the skepticism and sneering that I receive from all quadrants. People think that the subject of my book was just a crazy person and good riddance to bad rubbish that he killed himself. But really he was better than most people on this planet combined. Myself, it will be good riddance to bad rubbish when I finally kill myself. But until then I will do what I do and fuck the world anyway because its always fucked me.

And that's how my spring is going. How the fuck is yours?

Warehousing the Elderly

This was my reply to a friends' post about moving a lady to an assisted living facility. You can read his post here.

http://analytixman.blogspot.com/…dying.html

Sadly, most assisted living and long term care facilities have rooms such as you describe. While the fat cats' pockets get fatter, our elderly and disabled continue to get the shaft.

The apartments in the place where I work are not like this. But said apartments are, to be blunt, hella expensive. The apartments in the independent living area are about $3500 a month. The ones in assisted living are $6000, and the rooms in long term care are $9000. I don't know about you, but I have a hard time managing the $1100 I pay between mortgage and lot rent on my mobile home. (I know you wouldn't do this, but if anyone else feels the need to refer to me as 'trailer park trash,' so be it.)

None of the people I work with could afford an apartment or room in the place where we work.

Its scary. I have long term care insurance and a retirement plan but when I look at what this brings as compared to the cost, it ain't much. I do try to save but there's not that much if anything left over to save when the bills are paid.

I worry about what's going to happen with my father. He had a stroke four and a half years ago and is badly handicapped. My mother is his 24-7 caregiver. No home health agency will deal with him because he's so difficult to do transfers with. I pulled a muscle in my chest helping to transfer him. If something happened to my mother he'd have to go into a care facility because he needs someone with him 24-7. My brother lives in a different state and of course I work a full time job. There's no way we could swing it. And that's a sad thing to have to admit.

My parents had $300,000 in savings which sounds like a lot but its quickly being eaten up by my fathers' medical costs.

I don't know just how it can be done but something really needs to change in the way our most vulnerable populations are treated.
